After research and testing, our ICSB Main Office laboratory developed a new semen freezing medium for marine mammals.
. Professor Carrol Platz, Jr., Director of ICSB at ICSB-Oregon Main Office, working closely with our ICSB-Nevada center in Las Vegas (Dr. Dennis Arn, Director) and the Mirage Casino in Las Vegas (Mr. Mike Muraco) developed this semen freezing solution and procedure for freezing the semen from the Bottle-Nosed Dolphin. Testing of this solution proved it to be the most successful recipe available for the cryopreservation of this species of Dolphin. Dr. Arn and Mr. Muraco travelled to Holland to artificially inseminate two of the Dolphins at the Dolphinarium with the frozen semen.  Interestingly, the method of determining the optimum time for the insemination in the female was very similar to the one we use in the canine.  The result of this trip was two offspring resulting from artificial insemination of the frozen Dolphin semen that was collected at the Mirage Casino, then evaluated and frozen at Dr. Arn's ICSB-Nevada center.
OOPS!
We just wanted to clarify a little information from our last newsletter. Pellets are easier to handle than straws.  The way it was worded  in the April newsletter made it a little difficult to understand.

ICSB JAPAN
ICSB will be opening 2 new centers in Japan this spring.  In May,Prof. Carrol Platz and Christina Platz will make a trip to Japan to begin training our new Wakayama Center. Japan  has recently opened up their registry to allow imported semen.  Japan should be an interesting country to watch in the coming years as ICSB's expansion throughout Japan continues to grow.

LOOK FOR OUR LOGO- AS SEEN ABOVE  (ICSB- International Canine Semen Bank)

We have recently had several of our clients letting us know that another company was representing themselves as ICSB or stating that they use ICSB recipes and techniques. Keep in mind that ICSB has developed our own solutions for working with canine semen.  These recipes for these solutions are kept in a secure location away from our laboratory and are inaccessible except for Professor Platz and his successors.  This solution being discussed is the media that sustains  life while in cryo-preservation. Not all solutions or medias are made the same. Our research is ongoing and improvements to our solutions and procedures change frequently. We have recently integrated new research that was developed only months ago, that enhances older ICSB methods and has proven to increase our long term storage recoveries. We are proud to offer you an educated research staff that is continuing to better your breeding program.
Please be sure to look for our logo, while there may be some alteration, it will always display a globe with "icsb" in the center. Make sure it is on all documents you sign and on the shirt of the collector at any show or clinic.
We do not solicite your business over the phone, through the mail or at shows.  None of our representatives will ever approach you about moving your semen from another bank to ours. We will never offer to do it "cheaper" than the "other semen bank," that may happen to be at that particular show.  Our prices have and always will remain consistent with the service we offer. We would rather work with you on a modest payment plan than to see you move your irreplaceable collections to an unproven company that may be "cheaper" in the short term. If you can not find an ICSB center that is convenient for storage  please call our office at 503-663-7031.  We will personally work with you on finding another company that suits you better.  We have very good working relationships with many semen and storage banks all over the world, we would be happy to give you a recommendation for a proven and REPUTABLE company in your area.

Sincerely,
Director Prof. Carrol C. Platz

Litter of the Month!!
dandie dinmont
 AAAAHHHH....................
Oh my goodness, I am so excited to open the mail and e-mails each day as we receive new adorable litter pictures.  You all did not dissapoint! Keep sending them in!  We may use some photos in the future from the last batch sent in, as it was so difficult to decide. The litter pictures may not be from a current litter, but we don't care as long as they were from frozen or fresh chilled semen using ICSB media and approved methods.    We are also creating a new website that will allow us to change the pictures more routinely than once a month.  Please feel free to forward our newsletter on to anyone else who might be interested in submitting a photo.

"Thanks for the good work you do at ICSB. You are helping to save this rare breed!" M

This month's photo was sent to us from Miriam Couto.  The adorable Dandie Dinmont Terrier puppies are the result of semen collected and frozen by ICSB in 1998. There were 5 puppies in the litter born 10-28-07, but one had gone to it's new home before the photo was taken.  Ch. Pennywise Kings Mtn. MVP X Ch.Clossongrey King's Mtn. Camila.
